It was a busy weekend for the members of the Concordia College
Indoor Track and Field team. The 2009 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Meet
was held in Olson Forum March 5-7, with St. Thomas winning both the
Men’s and Women’s team titles. The Cobber Men finished sixth and the
women came in fifth.
The weekend was filled with many great
individual performances for the Cobbers. Seniors Paul Westmark and Paul
Shol started the events off right for the men by taking first and
third, respectively, in Thursday’s Pentathlon finals. Juniors Leah Kay
and Tara Ray also performed well in the women’s Pentathlon with Kay
taking second and Ray coming in seventh. Shol, Westmark, and Kay are
all provisional qualifiers for the National Championships.
From
there, things really got going on Friday. In the women’s events,
several Cobbers were able to do quite well. Sophomore Hailey Brenden
finished second in the 5K, with a time of 17:58.93. Junior Kelsey
Bratlie also competed in the event, finishing 14th. Also getting second
in her event was sophomore Alexa Kleingartner, who was barely edged out
in the 55 meter hurdles. Leah Kay earned seventh in the same event.
Senior Kristina Bruns did well in the long jump, placing fourth. Fellow
senior Brittney Christianson ran a very good mile time of 5:16.36, good
for fifth. Also finishing fifth was the distance medley team, made up
of junior Anna Hagen, freshman Kristiana Sather, seniors Kendra
Bengston, and Brittney Christianson.
Other notable results for
the Cobbers include: sophomore Emily Davis, sixth in the 20-lb. weight
toss; junior Kristen Slette, sixth in the 400m; freshman Rachel Mjones,
tenth in the 800m; sophomore Britney Barnett, 12th in the mile; and
freshman Tessa Comstock, 15th in the pole vault.
Several men
were able to earn top spots Friday as well. Junior Xavier Carroll
earned the Cobbers one of their top finishes Friday, notching fourth in
the 55 meter with a time of 6.56 seconds. Paul Westmark was also able
to earn fourth in his event, the 55 meter hurdles, with a time of 7.81
seconds. Freshmen Joe Bruenjes and David Beery also turned in
exceptional performances in the long jump, earning fifth and eighth
place, respectively.
Other notable Friday results include:
sophomore Tom Sederquist, tenth in the 5000m; Paul Westmark, tenth in
the 400m; sophomore David Haugen, tenth in the 800m; junior Eric Juven,
11th in the 800m; and Paul Lillehaugen, 13th in the 800m. The distance
medley team, comprised of freshman Adam Fitzgerald, sophomore Michael
Dunn, junior Mike Reponen, and Paul Shol, finished 11th.
The women had several impressive finishes Saturday. The top result of
the day was accomplished by Hailey Brenden, who ran a 3000 meter time
of 10:17.37, finishing second. sophomore Alyssa Deutschmann took third
in the high jump, with a height of 5 feet, 3 1/4 inches. Kristina Bruns
took third in the triple jump, with a jump of 35 feet, 4 3/4 inches,
and freshman Tatijana Muller-Dahlber took eighth in the same event. It
was a good day for the 800 meter relay team of freshman Chrissy Boros,
freshman Greta King, Alexa Kleingartner, and Kristin Slette, who
finished fourth. The 1600 meter relay team, made up of Kristiana
Sather, sophomore Ruth Ranum, Kristen Slette, and junior Brittney
Kolstad, finished seventh.
Other
notable results on Saturday for the women include: Leah Kay, Tara Ray,
and junior Stacey Sellner, sixth, 13th, and 14th in the high jump,
respectively; Kristen Slette, eighth in the 600m; Kendra Bengston and
Anna Hagen, ninth and eleventh in the 1000m, respectively; Brittney
Christianson, 12th in the 3000m; Greta King and Chrissy Boros, 14th and
15th in the 200m, respectively.
The men also had a good day.
Senior William Oehlers earned second in the shot put, with a toss of 51
feet, 1/4 inches, earning him a provisional NCAA qualification. Senior
Nick Birchem had a toss of 46 feet, 5 1/2 inches, good for fifth.
Freshman Felix Okoth earned third in the triple jump, with a distance
of 45 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Paul Westmark continued his weekend, placing
fourth in the pole vault, with a height of 14 feet, 1/2 inches.
Freshman Dan Thorson placed 12th in the same event. Tom Sederquist
finished seventh in the 3000 meter. The men’s 1600 meter relay team,
made up of Paul Shol, Paul Westmark, Michael Dunn, and David Beery,
took seventh.
Other notable Cobber results from Saturday
include: Michael Dunn, ninth in the 600 yard dash; David Haugen, tenth
in the 600 yard dash; Eric Juven, 14th in the 600 yard dash.
