The good guys finally pulled one out, and it was certainly a big win. It is always good for team morale, fan support, and job security when you can beat a rival, and Al Groh certainly had his players motivated on Saturday night. While Scott Stadium hosted a far from capacity crowd, you would never have known by the atmosphere created by the fans. Some do not buy into the idea that the fans actually have an impact, but there was energy Saturday night going into the game, that the players used effectively. The Maryland team that showed up looked more like the team that struggled against Delaware and lost to Middle Tennessee State than the team that beat Clemson and California.
So what is next for Virginia? A contest against an inconsistent East Carolina team; a team that beat both Virginia Tech and West Virginia early in the season, but has faded lately. The biggest thing for Virginia is to show some consistency. Marc Verica is not going to have the type of game he had a week ago every game, that is just not realistic, as there is a reason he was the third string quarterback a year ago. Virginia needs to run the ball, and commit to the run to take the pressure off of Verica. The young offensive line looks to be improving, and the defense needs to bring the same intensity that it brought against Maryland. If we can do these things, it will bode well for the cavaliers.
That game was one of the weirdest ACC results I've seen in a long time, maybe ever. Maryland was playing excellent football and they had already beaten two Top 25 teams. I think it was safe to assume that the Terps loss to Middle Tennessee St was an aberration. Virginia, on the other hand, was lost. They had 3 TD's in four games and wasn't competitive in any of their losses. I think it was the margin of victory that was the most surprising.
Who knows where Maryland goes from here but as far as UVa is concerned, they have to be happy about the way their defense has played at home the last two games. It'll still be tough for them to make any noise in the ACC considering they have to go to Ga Tech, Wake and Va Tech but just being competitive should be their goal. If they can beat ECU and get to 3-3 stranger things have happened.
