Top Female High School Hoops player calls it quits.

THERE'S OBVIOUSLY SOME TYPE OF PERSONAL PROBLEM THAT'S CAUSED THIS. IT'S ONE THING IF SHE DIDN'T WANT TO GO TO UCONN BUT IF SHE'S NOT PLAYING COLLEGE HOOPS AT ALL, THERE'S A MUCH BIGGER ISSUE SHE'S DEALING WITH. I HOPE SHE GETS IT WORKED OUT.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- Elena Delle Donne, Connecticut's top recruit of this year's class, has decided not to enroll at the university, women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma said Saturday.

The 6-foot-5 forward, also courted by Tennessee before committing to UConn, "has decided not to play college basketball," Auriemma said in a brief statement.

"Everyone at UConn would like to wish Elena the best of luck," he added.

Delle Donne, 18, was chosen as the nation's top female player this spring, winning the Naismith National High School Player of the Year award based on her career at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Del.

She averaged 30 points and 11 rebounds last season, despite missing 10 games because of mononucleosis. She was also Delaware's career leading scorer for boys and girls with 2,818 points.

Della Donne would have been the third consecutive national player of the year to attend UConn, following Tina Charles in 2006 and Maya Moore last season.

She came to UConn in June for summer school, but left after two days to return to Delaware. Delle Donne told ESPN then that she needed a long break for problems that go beyond basketball.

UConn officials said the statement Saturday will be Auriemma's final comment on the player's departure, "in an effort to respect the privacy of Elena and the Delle Donne family."

I read about this story locally here in the Delaware area. She skipped her high school graduation so she attend the summer session at UConn. She didn't play any basketball last summer also citing the need for some time off. The only thing anyone can surmise is that it's a physical problem that she initially overcame, but has since recurred. Either that or maybe she just came to the realization that she doesn't want to play basketball anymore. Let's hope it's the latter.

Boy how a story changes. Now Delle Donne will be enrolling at Delaware and playing volleyball. UConn is releasing her from her scholarship contingent on her enrolling at Delaware. They also are allowing her to play whatever sport she wants. However, because she was at summer school at UConn for a couple of days, the NCAA needs to OK her hoops eligibility. Guess she wasn't sick after all. Homesick maybe but not ill.

Now she's just playing volleyball at Delaware. She's sick of basketball and says it's not part of her life right now. Who knows what's really going on and I'm pretty sure I don't care anymore. As a UConn fan, I wouldn't want here there if her heart wasn't into playing.
