A look at the CSFL for the week of 10/10

Posted by bbenson on Oct 6, 2009 11:56:21 AM

The CFSL is midway through the season! Can you believe it? A couple of teams are doing pretty well, while a couple more continue to find themselves in a winning drought. Here’s a look at last week’s games and the week to come…

Bacone and Southern Naz went head-to-head this past weekend with the Crimson Storm winning 50-29. On the offensive side of the ball Shawn Walls was 31 of 50 for 337 and four touchdowns. The Warriors had a total of 334 yards after the -3 yards rushing they accumulated. Bacone also struggled with turnovers fumbling the ball six times and losing four of them. Defensively, the Warriors were led by Gabriel Ramos who had 11 total tackles on the day including one sack and a tackle for a loss. Bacone remains winless currently sitting at 0-4.

However, that could all change this weekend when they play host to Texas College. The Steers most recent loss was at the hands of Mississippi Valley State 61-6. TC, like Bacone has yet to find a win this season, with their overall record at 0-5. This season, the Steers defense has allowed an average of 515 yards per game. This past weekend, TC’s defense allowed 549 yards of offense with MVSU’s Paul Roberts throwing for 329 yards and 5 touchdowns. On offense, the Steers have scored 18 points…not in a game…all season long. They average 177 yards per game and are lucky if they hit 30 yards rushing. So who wins this weekend? I think Bacone ends their losing streak for now and gets their first win of the season. Texas College, unfortunately, will advance to 0-6.

Langston also had inner conference play this past weekend hosting SW Assemblies of God. Langston continued their winning streak beating SAGU 37-10 to advance their overall record to 5-1. Carlos Ross led the rushing attack for the Langston Lions carrying the ball 13 times for 114 total yards and one touchdown. QB Darrion Lewis completed 15 of 21 for 177 yards including two touchdowns and unfortunately, one interception. The Lion defense was led by Rodrick Jenkins and Mark Brown who had seven tackles a piece. The defense held SAGU to just 29 yards of rushing offense while also coming away with two interceptions.

This week, Langston will travel just down the road (or up the road rather) to NW Oklahoma State. The Rangers have had this past week off. The week prior, NWOSU lost to SE Oklahoma State 29-9. The Rangers are currently sitting at 2-2 on the season. I hope this will be a good game. I see it being fairly close. It will be interesting to see Carlos Ross and Nate Guillory, who both lead their teams in rushing, compete on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, keep your eyes on standouts Mark Brown and Lantz Mathers. Though NWOSU has the home field advantage…while it may be close, I see Langston pulling away with the win…just barely.

Southern Nazarene will travel out of the CSFL to play this weekend. Last week, as I said before, the Storm handily beat Bacone 50-29. As if the win wasn’t enough of a pat on the back, all 3 CSFL player-of-the-week honors went to SNU players. Brady Wardlaw received the offensive award with his 253 total yards and five touchdowns. Dante Campbell was recognized defensively for his ten tackles including three tackles for a loss equaling 18 yards, 1.5 sacks and a broken up pass. And Kevin Brooks picked up the special teams award for his 186 yards on seven returns.

This weekend, Southern Naz will travel to Southwest Baptist University. The Bearcats are currently 2-4 with their most recent victory over Central Oklahoma 31-23. I think if SNU can stay on track and Brady Wardlaw can continue to throw the ball well, the Storm should be able to stay in this game. Because I want to see a team from the CSFL with a win as much as anyone who follows this conference, I’m going to pick SNU to come out on top in this one.

And in case you’re wondering with SW Assemblies of God is this weekend, the Lions have the week of the 10th off. They will be back in action next weekend for inner conference competition hosting Southern Nazarene.

That’s a quick look at last week’s results and the upcoming weekend in the CSFL. Feel free to let me know what your thoughts are on the games!

No way SNU wins... blowout.

Ya think? I don't know enough about SW Baptist so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, first it is Southwest Baptist's homecoming. 2 of their 4 losses are to Southern Illinois(FCS) and D2 powerhouse NW Missouri State.  Not many NAIA opponents to compare too but the Bearcats last year played two NAIA opponents which accounted for 2 of their 5 wins: beat Grand View 54-14 and beat Bethany 83-6.  SNU is in for a long game, I promise.

Well if anyone knows about the CSFL teams...it's probably you!

Benson,

I love your optimism regarding the Crimson Storm...That being said, my optimism (ie-blind love for my school) for SNU has cost me the CFL pick'em for the past three seasons....Hope you and the College Fanz team had a good time during your visit for SNU/Bethel game a few weeks ago.
