PARKVILLE, Mo. -- With three scores all in the second half, Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College upset No. 11 ranked Park (Mo.) University, 3-1, Wednesday night (Oct. 7) at Julian Field.
The Pirates dropped to 5-2-0 on the season and 1-1 in the AMC, while the Trojans improved to 6-3-1 and 2-0-0 in the AMC.
The Pirates came out of the gates first with a score in the 31st minute from freshman Jair Gooden. The Kingston, Jamaica native waited patiently for a ball that was deflected by the keeper and after regaining possession, Gooden slammed it home to make it 1-0.
The Trojans waited 42 minutes before scoring, as Kevin Zimmerman took a nice header right into the goal in the 73rd minute to tie up the game. Agustin Sanchez then scored in the 81st minute to put the Trojans up one.
Dustin Frietig sealed the deal in the 85th minute as he blew by a Park defender and knocked one past keeper, T.G. Frame.
The three goals given up by Park are the most in a game since Oct. 11, 2008, when the Pirates lost to Bellevue University, 3-2.
Two Pirates earned their first career start on Wednesday night, as keeper Frame and Dawit Gebremariam both started for the Pirates. Gebremariam started the game at the midfield position.
The Pirates out shot Hannibal, 14-9, on the day and had the same amount of shots on goal as the Trojans with three.
Park will next take the field in a pivotal AMC match against No. 24 ranked Columbia College on the road this Saturday, Oct. 10 at 3:00 p.m. Park defeated the Cougars, 3-2, the last time they met on September 20, 2008, in a match that was also on the road.
